  • The dataset consists of: (1) Listing of full site survey package of geophysical data held in the IODP Data Bank in support of proposal 864. Details of how to obtain existing freely available or commercial proprietary data are included. (2) Final version of Full Science Proposal 864, which contains: description and illustrations of the regional stratigraphy of Pernambuco Plateau, as interpreted by the Virtual Site Survey project; site summary sheets for all proposed drill sites based on the Virtual Site Survey. (3) A complete list of all deliverables associated with this project is provided in the Data Archiving Report.

  • This document data set contains paper copies of selected geophysical borehole logs made from the master data set held by the BGS National Geological Records Centre (NGRC) at Keyworth. These have been made for interpretation. Most data are within the UK onshore area; although there are some UK near-shore and offshore (North Sea, Irish Sea) and foreign data. Most data were acquired for commercial hydrocarbon exploration and subsequently provided to BGS for use on specific projects. Some data were acquired by BGS and other public-sector bodies for research purposes (e.g. geothermal energy). The documents are dyeline prints or plain-paper photocopies. They are stored folded in boxes, approx 20 logs per box, approx 500 boxes. There are some duplicates. Only a sub-set of the available borehole logs have been copied, usually for deep boreholes or boreholes of special significance in the interpretation of seismic data. Mostly concentrated in areas prospective for coal, oil and gas.

  • Results of geotechnical testing carried out, at various depth intervals, on shallow cores or boreholes collected by BGS from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). The bulk of the data north of 56N are in digital form and result from testing carried out onboard survey vessels using hand-held test equipment (penetrometers and shear vanes). These values are averaged for each test interval, and are expressed in kilopascals (kPa). There are approximately 6,000 test results in the dataset. Some more detailed test information, in non-digital and report form, is held for selected sites. For most sites where digital data are not available, geological descriptions of core material contain semi-quantitative information on the stiffness of the material. Geotechnical knowledge is required to understand and interpret the results if they are to be used as a basis for engineering studies. Core material is managed as part of the BGS materials collection and is available for examination, testing or subsampling. The data are stored as part of the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) and the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) Data Archive Centre (DAC) for geology and geophysics.   • Results of particle size analysis (PSA) performed on approximately 29,000 seabed sediment samples collected by BGS from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and adjacent deep water areas, mostly using sediment grabs, but also sediment corers on occasions. Measurements were also made on approximately 8,000 downhole sub-samples from shallow cores and boreholes. Data from other UK organisations have also been added to this PSA dataset. The data are held within the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) as the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) Data Archive Centre (DAC) for geology and geophysics.   • Corrected and smoothed and network adjusted ship gravity, magnetics and bathymetry data acquired by BGS as part of its Offshore Reconnaissance Mapping Programme. This programme was commenced in 1967, funded mainly by the Department of Energy.

  • Available metadata for oil and gas industry site surveys, including their geographic locations. As the Data Archive Centre (DAC) for geology and geophysics for MEDIN (the Marine Environment Data and Information Network), the British Geological Survey (BGS) has been indexing metadata relating to oil and gas industry site surveys since 2009. The metadata describe site survey data acquired under exploration and production licences by oil companies from 1997 onwards. The metadata have been collected in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) (now the North Sea Transition Authority, NSTA). The metadata collected include: survey name; survey reference number(s); originator (or operating licencee); survey area boundary; contractor; start date; end date; survey description; additional information (including the equipment used); and the data custodian at the time of metadata submission. BGS hold only the metadata, not the data. To access the data, first check whether the data are provided by the NSTA through the National Data Repository (NDR) at https://ndr.nstauthority.co.uk/. If the data are not available, the NDR may be able to contact the data custodian to obtain the data.

  • Particle Size Analysis (PSA) and organic carbon content data from marine sediment sampling of two plots within the Trevose Box off south-west England between 14 - 18 April 2023 before and after fishing. This DEFRA funded FISP (Fisheries Industry Science Partnerships scheme) project aimed to understand the acute effects of scallop dredging and beam trawling on seabed carbon. The project was led by Bangor University in collaboration with Imperial College London, CEFAS, Western Fish Producers Organisation and the South Western Fish Producer Organisation. The study was conducted in two areas offshore south-west England, UK. The areas were within the Trevose box, which is a management area closed to bottom fishing for the months of January, February and March each year. This allowed us to sample areas which had not been exposed to fishing immediately before our sampling which would reduce the chance of seeing any effect from our experimental fishing. One plot was designated an area that would be experimentally fished by a beam trawler, and another by a scallop dredger (Figure 1). The plots were chosen to minimise differences in depth, seabed habitat, sediment type, wave energy and tidal currents within and between them. Both were chosen where their respective types of fishing gear had been used previously, although scallop dredging has been less common in this area in recent years. The sampling from the RV Prince Madog and experimental fishing from the fishing vessels took place between 14 – 18th April 2023. Before any fishing activity took place, grab sampling was conducted in the dredge plot and in the beam trawl plot that would be later fished to varying amounts, which will be referred to as ‘Times fished’ or ‘fishing intensity’. A 0.1 m2 Day grab was used. When the day grab was onboard two cores were used to subsample the grab sample as deep as possible, these were then sliced in 1 cm intervals and frozen onboard for later carbon analysis. A homogenised sample from the day grab was also taken for Particle Size Analysis. After the ‘Before’ grab samples were taken, a beam trawler and scallop dredger towed their gear along the sampled lanes in each respective plot.   • The Marine Reports Archive held by BGS includes published and unpublished reports created by BGS and acquired from various sources. The reports which date from the 1960s onwards include the BGS Marine Reports Series, Marine Commercial reports and associated records, Palaeontology reports and other specialist reports. Examples of report types are data acquisition and processing reports, site investigation reports and interpretation reports. The reports are primarily for the UKCS (United Kingdom Continental Shelf). The coverage of some reports is the entire UKCS whilst other have only regional or very localised extent. The reports are applicable to a wide range of uses including environmental, geotechnical, geophysical and geological studies.

  • The concentrations of up to 30 trace elements in approximately 9,000 sea-bed samples from the UK Continental Shelf were determined by BGS using a variety of analytical techniques. In some cases samples were tested using more than one method. The analyses were carried out on freeze-dried samples of the sand and mud fractions of the samples. The data are stored as part of the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) and the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) Data Archive Centre (DAC) for Geology and Geophysics.   • The British Geological Survey has collected over 50,000 offshore samples using grabs, dredges and shallow coring devices (to a maximum depth of 6m below the sea bed). The collection also includes additional third party data and has assisted in the creation of BGS marine geology maps. The distribution is variable, but in general there are sample stations spaced approximately every 5 - 10 km across the entire UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), and in some localised areas the sampling density is much higher. The data held include digital data and analogue records (sample data sheets), plus associated physical sample material. Sample data sheets, which have been scanned, contain index information and geological descriptions. They become more detailed from 1983 onwards. Coded geological descriptions were entered on sheets which were subsequently digitized, and this information is available for about 10,000 samples. The data also includes results of analyses such as micropalaeontological examination or age dating. All sample material is managed as part of the BGS materials collection and are available for examination and subsampling. The data are stored within the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) and Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) Data Archive Centre (DAC) for Geology and Geophysics. These geological data are delivered via the BGS GeoIndex. Separate layers are provided for different types of sample: borehole-type samples, grab samples and other equipment types. These layers contain the geological data, and metadata about the samples themselves, as well as links to scanned datasheets and core logs, are provided in separate metadata layers. For some of these samples, particle size analysis (PSA), geochemical and geotechnical data are also available, and these data are provided in separate layers.
