  • Reference books, produced to accompany many of the 1:50 000 scale (district) maps, which describe the extent, nature and structure of the rock strata of the district. They often also include details of the geophysics, geochemistry, hydrogeology and economic geology of the district.

  • Data include geological logs and charts; letters, minutes & memos; notes; externally written reports; Internal reports; Research Reports; annotated publications, records and reports; and other miscellaneous documentation. Although some of the data go back to the first half of the 20th century (and rarely earlier), the bulk of the data refer to work carried out since about 1960. The data are filed under four subheadings: i. 1:50K sheet files (data relating to BGS mapping projects) for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. ii. Offshore sheet files (data relating to BGS mapping projects) for the UK continental shelf and North Atlantic. iii. Offshore Quadrants (data relating to the hydrocarbons industry) (confidential). iv. Foreign biostratigraphy (in part confidential). v. General Palaeontology, Biostratigraphy & Taxonomy.

  • Index to Statutory Borehole Notifications of intent to drill a borehole for water supply.

  • Series of reports on Wells and Springs of English counties, Wartime Pamphlets of water wells and published BGS Well Inventories.

  • 4 volumes of the donations by Kidston of onshore British (predominantly Palaeozoic) plants. Geological and geographical information, notes and photos are present. Kidston's own numbering system was maintained: 1-7319. Reference is also made to the publication in which specimens were illustrated.

  • Values of the geomagnetic field vector components computed from measurements made on land, at sea and in the air since 1900 all round the world. Repeat station data (collected at one location over many years and reduced to a magnetically quiet level) are an important part of this dataset. These data are useful for charting the Earth's magnetic field on time scales of years to decades.
