  • This dataset contains over 4000 faecally-contaminated environmental samples collected over 2 years across 53 dairy farms in England. The samples were analysed for E. coli resistance to amoxicillin, streptomycin, cefalexin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin and detection of resistant strains is presented in the dataset as a binary result, along with mechanisms of resistance to third generation cephalosporins where relevant.   • This dataset consists of faecally-contaminated samples taken from the environment around pre-weaned calves on 51 farms in South-West England during 2017/2018 and is a subset of a larger dataset investigating antibiotic resistance in E. coli across 53 farms. The samples were analysed for presence of E. coli resistant to amoxicillin, streptomycin, cephalexin, tetracycline and/or ciprofloxacin. Management factors deemed related to pre-weaned calves are included, including antibiotic usage data at farm level.   • The dataset consists of results of the electrochemical circle fit of the Nyquist plot generated by NOVA software to measure the Charge Transfer Resistance (RCT). Data demonstrates the curve of real and imaginary resistance against charges transmitted in the media of the carbon electrode biosensor. The change in RCT can detect the presence of the targeted antimicrobial resistance (AMR) DNA. The experiments were conducted by immersing the sensor's electrode in different concentrations of the target AMR DNA to determine the limit of detection.   • The dataset collates the relative concentration of nearly 300 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes found in soil locations across Scotland. Soils were obtained from the National Soils Inventory of Scotland (NSIS2), from which the total community DNA were extracted and provided to assess AMR gene content. Sampling of the NSIS2 was conducted between 2007-2010 at 183 soil locations representing intersections of a 20km grid across all of Scotland. For each sample, nearly 300 AMR genes were assessed representing major antibiotic classes, and included many resistance traits: aminoglycosides, beta-lactams, FCA (fluoroquinolone, quinolone, chloramphenicol, florfenicol and amphenicol resistance genes), MLSB (macrolide, lincosamide, streptogramin B), tetracycline, vancomycin, sulphonamide, efflux pumps and integron genes. The data represent relative gene abundance, i.e., the amount of genes per "total bacteria".   • The dataset provides observational information on events when humans are in contact with poultry in rural and urban Bangladesh. Data were collected during observation periods of three hours duration in three settings where humans and poultry have close interactions: rural households with domestic poultry and small-scale commercial farms in rural areas of Tangail district and market stalls that sell, slaughter and process live poultry in Dhaka city. Observations on hygiene or handwashing behaviours that take place before or after contact with poultry, poultry products (eggs, meat) or poultry waste (bedding, faeces or carcasses) were also recorded. A structured observation sheet was used to record the number of occurrences of pre-defined activities. The objective was to record the types of contact behaviours and proportion of human-poultry interactions that could result in human exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria carried by poultry. The research was part of a wider research project, Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Transmission from the Outdoor Environment to Humans in Urban and Rural Bangladesh.   • Measurements of tree resistance to ground and adjacent soils in the Ankasa Conservation Area located in southwestern Ghana. Tree species were selected as representative of the dominant species with diameter at breast height (DBH) ranging from 17.8 to 77.8 cm. The selected 20 trees had DBH ranging from 17.8 to 77.8 cm. In addition, measurements were extended to a single liana (Connarus africanus) with 7.0 cm DBH. Data on tree and soil resistivity were collected on the same 20 trees for both wet (March) and dry (September) season campaigns in 2019.   • The data presented are quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) read outs from antimicrobial resistance gene (AMRG) assays and associated metadata from this project. In this dataset, the mean gene copy numbers per microlitre of DNA extract are shown. The data were collected from faecal and environmental samples which were obtained from a single British commercial pig unit. The former were collected from the sow housing barn, pig growing houses and slurry tanks within the farm unit and the latter were obtained through random stratified sampling of the farm and the surrounding land. These samples were taken from what will be referred to as the 'main study'. A further study was carried out to obtain samples after a partial depopulation which took place on this farm. Faecal samples were obtained from the sow housing barn, pig growing houses and slurry tanks and will be referred to as the 'depopulation (depop) study'. For the main study, the samples were collected between October 19th 2016 and April 5th 2017. For the depop study, the samples were collected between 19th June 2017 and 13th November 2017. The data associated with all samples were generated between August 1st 2017 and May 1st 2018.   • The dataset provides qualitative data from anonymised in-depth interviews conducted in 2017 with domestic poultry owners, commercial poultry farm workers and market sellers of live poultry in Bangladesh. The dataset comprises interview transcripts in Bangla. Household and farm interviews were carried out in rural areas of Mirzapur sub-district, Tangail. Interviews with market sellers of poultry were carried out in Dhaka city. An interview guide was used to explore themes and topics relating to poultry-raising practices, hygiene and waste disposal practices relating to poultry and use of antibiotics in poultry. The objective was to understand human behaviours and practices that may contribute to environmental contamination with antibiotic-resistant bacteria from poultry and potential pathways of transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from poultry to humans. The research was part of a wider research project, Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Transmission from the Outdoor Environment to Humans in Urban and Rural Bangladesh.
