  • A dataset of historical sediment Carbon and Nitrogen isotope measurements from lake cores (n=95) spanning the range of lake types and catchments found across the UK. These data have been obtained from the Environmental Change Research Centre (ECRC) lake sediment core archive with well-resolved time intervals (1850, 1900, 1980 and present) determined by radiometric dating (210Pb; 137Cs). This data has been collated to investigate historical sources and accumulation of C and N in lakes. This dataset provides historical data for hydrological / nutrient modelling from the Long Term Large Scale (LTLS) Project in the NERC Macronutrients programme. • [THIS DATASET HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN]. Data comprise wood specific gravity (WSG) and density at 12% moisture content (D12) in wood cores sampled from trees in the Ankeniheny Zahamena forest corridor, the remains of the evergreen forest of eastern Madagascar. The data also include date of sample collection, zone identifier, core identifier, local and scientific tree name, tree height and diameter. Samples were analysed by UFR Sciences du bois de l'ESSA-forêts, Université d'Antananarivo. Data were collected as part of a project funded under the Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) programme. Work package 4, P4GES project Full details about this dataset can be found at https://doi.org/10.5285/5e9fe20b-8d00-4bd3-99cb-7989fa781348

  • This dataset presents a harmonised collection of sediment carbon measurements from over 2,000 cores collected across the Southern Ocean and Southern Hemisphere (wider polar front), south of 49degrees. The dataset was compiled to enable quantitative assessments of sedimentary carbon stocks and identify regional hotspots and cold spots of blue carbon, as well as pinpointing trends and gaps in data collection. Drawing on published literature, data repositories, cruise archives, and correspondence with researchers, the compilation addresses longstanding fragmentation and inconsistency in sediment carbon reporting. The database includes measurements of total organic and inorganic carbon (TOC, TIC/CaCO3), and where possible some contextual biological information such as porosity, grain density and grain size. Additionally, where possible, data is georeferenced and cited (inclusive of access links) and further complimentary metadata is provided. The dataset may provide a key resource for future conservation planning, carbon accounting, and potentially climate modelling in polar marine ecosystems. This project was funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) grant number GB096001.
