The data comprises records of phenotypic traits of outbred Gryllus bimaculatus that were bred in a laboratory. Inbreeding was minimized by avoiding crossing family lines. Traits that were measured include adult body mass, development time, and lifespan. The data were collected in 2023 by researchers from the University of Glasgow to investigate the effects of parental age and temperature conditions on offspring life-history. We chose this species because we have complementary field projects on field crickets and they are easily maintained in a lab. The resource consists of genome sequence data for the Drosophila C virus that has been serially passaged through different species of Drosophila in the laboratory. The genomes were sequenced and aligned to the reference genome. The frequency of variants at both biallelic and triallelic sites was then calculated. We also generated a phylogeny of the species involved using published data. This data was generated to understand how viruses adapt to new host species by Francis Jiggins and his co workers. The data comprises both compositional data and growth assay data from an experiment of wild bacterial communities in Wytham Woods, Oxford. The communities live in puddles of water in tree-holes formed by the roots of beech trees. We manipulated the pH of tree-holes during the experiment for comparison with control tree-holes that were unmanipulated. Compositional data comprises the frequency of different Amplicon Sequencing Variants and derived measures of species diversity for samples taken over time (up to 12 weeks from the start of the experiment). The growth assay data comprises measurements of growth rates of community samples and isolates back in the laboratory, when grown on beech tea media manipulated to have different pHs. The data set describes foraging decisions by great tits (Parus major), held in temporary captivity. Data were collected from birds caught from forest at the University of Jyväskylä Research Station, Konnevesi (62°37.7'N 026°17'E), Finland, and were collected during the winter of 2013-2014. Birds were presented with (1) two different coloured plastic cups, or (2) two different artificial prey (almond pieces inside a paper packet and printed with a black and white symbol). One symbol was made bitter-tasting by soaking the almond piece in chloroquine, and learning behaviour was recorded over three trials. Half of the birds in both experiments were presented videos of a demonstrator great tit, to provide social information about prey characteristics and unpalatability. Data were collected to test hypotheses about the evolutionary consequences of social information use by predators as part of a NERC-funded Independent Research Fellowship.
