The dataset contains stable isotope data from surface and groundwater samples collected in the Gandak Basin, north India. The data was collected between March 2017 and February 2019. These measurements were taken to improve understanding of surface and subsurface water interconnections and movement through river and canal networks and underlying aquifers. Data provided are monthly surface water layers extracted from Sentinel1A SAR data for 3 districts in India (Shivamogga, Sindhudurg, Wayanad) for the year 2017 and 2018. Surface water body layers were mapped using an average monthly threshold value extracted from the image backscatter histogram. The average threshold value excluded the monsoon months due to the difference in water and not water area. The threshold value was slightly lesser than the mean threshold value. The end product was validated using field data which resulted in user and producer accuracies. Monthly surface water body layers were not produced for a few months due to the non-availability of Sentinel 1 data. This is a long-term monitoring dataset of surface temperature, surface oxygen, water clarity, water chemistry and phytoplankton chlorophyll a from weekly to fortnightly sampling at Grasmere in Cumbria, England that began in 1968 for some variables. The data were initially collected by the Freshwater Biological Association but have been collected by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) and its predecessor Institute of Freshwater Ecology since 1989. The data available to download comprise surface temperature (TEMP) in degree Celsius, surface oxygen saturation (OXYG) in % air-saturation, Secchi depth (SECC) in metres, alkalinity (ALKA) in µg per litre as CaCO3 and pH. Ammonium (NH4N), nitrate (NO3N), soluble reactive phosphate (PO4P), total phosphorus (TOTP), dissolved reactive silicon expressed as SiO2 (SIO2) and phytoplankton chlorophyll a (TOCA) are all given in µg per litre. Measurements are made from a boat at a marked location (buoy) at the deepest part of the lake. When it was not possible to visit the buoy, samples were taken from the shore, thus water samples were not integrated on these occasions, marked as Flag 2. This dataset comprises field sensor physicochemical and optical/fluorescence measurements, as well as laboratory microbiological and chemical analysis, for urban surface water samples. Samples were collected at different locations throughout the urban area of Kolkata, with the latitude and longitude of all sample location provided within the spreadsheets. Samples/data were collected across three separate field surveys undertaken in June 2018 (file 1), March 2019 (file 2) and December 2019 (file 3). This dataset forms a case study of the water quality of three different types of urban surface freshwaters within the city of Kolkata, India. This case study was created to deploy a prototype multichannel fluorimeter and assess its ability to identify waters with a high bacterial load and biological contamination events through the use of Peak T fluorescence.
