This dataset includes a set of modelled outputs produced as part of the DECIDE project. Three groups were modelled; butterflies, day-flying moths and night-flying moths. (For the moths, we only considered 'macro-moths'.) For each group there are three outputs; species richness, model variability and DECIDE recording priority. The outputs summarise across multiple species within each group. The model’s prediction probability of occurrence for individual species is not made available. The outputs are in a raster format on Ordnance Survey National Grid reference system (OSGB) at 100m x 100m resolution. Species richness layers are a modelled prediction of how many species are present at a location. Model variability is used to determine where a model is uncertain about its prediction of species occurrence. Model variability is combined with information about how recently a species had been recorded to produce the DECIDE recording priority. The DECIDE recording priority is a measure to prioritise locations to support adaptive sampling of where to collect species occurrence data to improve species distribution models. The dataset contains annual abundance indices and trends in abundance for 477 species of moths (mostly macro-moths) estimated using the data collected by Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS) from their light-trap network between the years 1968 and 2021. The abundance indices are trends calculated using Generalized Abundance Index (GAI) models. The trends are presented as Annual Growth Rates (AGR), and the total percentage changes over the time series for each species are also provided. The indices and trends include 95% confidence limits estimated via bootstrapping. Abundance indices and trends are presented for the entire network of traps across Britain, Ireland, and the Channel Islands, as well as country level analyses for England, Scotland, and Wales. This dataset contains moth species, parasitoid and resource provisioning data from a hedgerow experiment investigating the long-term effects of timing and frequency of cutting on resource provision for wildlife. The experiment site was based at at Monks Wood, Cambridgeshire, UK. Moth larvae were collected in May to September 2011 and reared in a laboratory. Moth larvae or adult moths, and any emerging parasitoids, were identified to species level where possible. Data on hedge plot dimensions and branching density and length were measured in the field at the same time as moth larvae sampling. Leaf samples were also collected and used to calculate biomass and determine foliar total carbon and nitrogen content. The hedgerow experiment was one of three long running hedgerow experiments focusing on management to maintain and restore the hedgerow resource under agri-environment schemes. These long running experiments were funded by Defra and managed by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
