The dataset consists of solute concentrations (Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Sodium, Aluminium, Phosphate, Nitrate, Ammonium, Chlorine, Sulphate), also pH and suspended solids, in waters sampled from clear felled and standing Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) forest ecosystems in Kershope Forest, Cumbria, UK. Water samples were collected from the ecosystem of a Sitka spruce plantation at weekly intervals for six years. The drainage system of the site had been designed to divide the plantation into a series of artificial catchments, three of which were designated experimental plots and clearfelled in the second year of sampling while three others were the control plots which remained unfelled until the end of the study. This work formed part of a programme of field and laboratory work to determine the effects of felling plantation forest on soil processes. Samples were collected by staff from the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE) between 1981 and 1987. Here we collate a database of all known birds, bryophytes, fungi, invertebrates, lichens and mammals that use Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) in the UK. Sitka spruce is the most commonly planted commercial tree species in the UK. In total 564 species are listed in the database. For each species we provide a level of association with Sitka spruce, ranging from obligate (only found on Sitka spruce) to cosmopolitan (found on a wide range of other tree species). Data on the ecology of each Sitka spruce associated species were collated: part of tree used, and use made of tree (feeding, roosting, breeding). Data on use or otherwise of 34 other tree species were also collated for each of the 564 species. This dataset contains daily germination rates of temperate tree species’ seed under elevated ozone fumigation in a closed chamber system. Daily counts of germinated sees were made. The seeds were exposed to an ambient and +60 parts per billion ozone treatment for approximately one month in the winter of 2024. Species tested were Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris and Picea sitchensis. These data were collected to examine the possible effect of ozone on timing and percentage success of seed germination. Data containing information on a study of the impact of Storm Arwen on biodiversity and forest structure of Kielder Forest (Northumberland), May-July 2022. The following are included: (i) fallen timber found along 100 m transects (species, tree circumference, and whether it was flat on the ground); (ii) trees found inside 10x10-m plots (species; diameter at breast height [DAP]; status [alive vs dead]; and whether the tree was still standing); (iii) plant cover and richness in 2x2 m quadrats (Braun-Blanquet cover and plant species present); (iv) spatial data (GIS layers and buffers around survey and sampling sites); and (v) bird point counts (species detected and distances to each individual recorded) Surveys were conducted at twelve control-impact pairs (24 sites in total), whereby impact sites were those severely affected by Storm Arwen. This dataset contains high resolution measurements of tree motion in response to wind at six sites. The data was collected using sensors mounted directly onto the tree trunk. The sites are: Rivox, Kershope, Kyloe and Clocaenog in the UK. Guanica in Puerto Rico and six open-grown trees from Australia.
