Data comprise relative humidity measured at an automatic monitoring buoy located in Blelham Tarn, UK. Data are provided from January 2012 to December 2019. Hourly averages are given, calculated from measurements taken every four minutes. All data is given in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). This dataset consists of physical, chemical and ecological water quality variables collected at Blelham Tarn during 2016-2017. Profiles for the following variables were collected on a weekly scale during the stratified period of the lake and fortnightly or monthly timescales outside of the stratified period; light, chlorophyll a (phytoplankton biomass proxy), temperature, specific conductivity, phycocyanin (cyanobacteria pigment), pH and oxygen (mg/l and percentage saturation). The secchi depth was also collected at the same sampling frequency. Phytoplankton taxonomy and biovolumes were collected at 1-6 m June-November 2016 at a weekly interval. Nutrient profiles (nitrogen, phosphorus and silica) were collected on a monthly timescale in June-October 2016. In addition to lake data, samples from three lake inflows and the outflow were collected for nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and silica) at monthly intervals along with discharge. Water level and water temperature were also recorded at a 15 minute frequency at one inflow and the outflow. This is a long-term monitoring dataset of surface temperature, surface oxygen, water clarity, water chemistry and phytoplankton chlorophyll a from weekly to fortnightly sampling at Blelham Tarn in Cumbria, England that began in 1945 for some variables. The data were initially collected by the Freshwater Biological Association but have been collected by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) and its predecessor Institute of Freshwater Ecology since 1989. The data available to download comprise surface temperature (TEMP) in degree Celsius, surface oxygen saturation (OXYG) in % air-saturation, Secchi depth (SECC) in metres, alkalinity (ALKA) in µg per litre as CaCO3 and pH. Ammonium (NH4N), nitrate (NO3N), soluble reactive phosphate (PO4P), total phosphorus (TOTP), dissolved reactive silicon expressed as SiO2 (SIO2) and phytoplankton chlorophyll a (TOCA) are all given in µg per litre. Water samples are based on a sample integrated from 0 to 5 m. Measurements are made from a boat at a marked location (buoy) at the deepest part of the lake. When it was not possible to visit the buoy, samples were taken from the shore, thus water samples were not integrated on these occasions, marked as Flag 2. This dataset consists of phyto- and zooplankton counts, chlorophyll concentration and fish catch data from the Cumbrian Lakes (Blelham Tarn, Esthwaite Water, Windermere north and south basins). The data span the years 1940 to 2013 but time series vary in length among different species and sites, and fish data are only available from Windermere. The original data were initially collected by the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) but have been collected by CEH and its predecessor Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IFE) since 1989.
