- At each sampling time, a portion of ca. 4 g soil from each microcosm was subjected to a three-step sequential extraction procedure devised to quantify (i) the ‘soluble’ 99Tc, which was extracted with 0.01 M KNO3; (ii) the ‘specifically adsorbed’ 99Tc, extracted with 0.16 M KH2PO4; and (iii) the ‘organically bound’ 99Tc associated with humic and fulvic acids, dissolved with 10% tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. Soil extracts were analysed using a Thermo Fisher Scientific iCAP-Q ICP-MS operating with a collision cell using He with kinetic energy discrimination. The Radioactive Standard NIST SRM 4288B (31.55 kBq g-1 of 99TcO4- in 0.001M KOH) was used for calibration.
