- Statement
- One third of rivers in Great Britain were sampled, accounting for approximately 36% of the catchment areas. For each river, a single visit was made once each month to collect water for analysis. Water was sampled using a bottle or bucket and then immediately filtered and/or decanted into other appropriate bottles, prior to being sent for analysis. Temperature was recorded immediately on sampled water. Conductivity was often done in situ but occasionally later in the laboratory if a field instrument was not available. The methods used for all parameters are described in the Supporting Documentation. Additional information on weather and flow and state of river was also recorded. In addition to the precise location of the sampling point, the Supporting Documentation on rivers includes NRFA code, catchment area, land use, standardised annual rainfall, Base Flow Index, altitude and percentage of carbonate rocks in catchment.
