Diurnal variability in alkaline phosphatase activity and alkaline phosphatase activity associated with zooplankton in subtropical North Atlantic (2010 to 2017)

This dataset contains fractional change in volumetric rates of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) over time determined from near surface samples and APA rates determined during incubation experiments using zooplankton collected from the Subtropical North Atlantic Ocean. Samples used in the final analyses were collected on-board the RRS James Clark Ross cruise JR15007 (June to July 2016), RRS James Cook cruise JC150 (June to August 2017) and a previously published dataset from Dr Oliver Wurl using samples collected on-board Research Vessel Knorr 199-5, a US GEOTRACES cruise. The final analyses of the data and samples collected on-board cruise JC150 were funded as part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) standard grant ‘Zinc, iron and phosphorus co-limitation in the Ocean (ZIPLOc)’ reference NE/N001079/1 lead by Principal Investigator Dr Claire Mahaffey and Co-Investigator Dr Clare Davis. The key aims were to assess if there was diurnal variability in APA, if zooplankton influenced APA in the surface ocean and quantified the diurnal variability in APA and the role of zooplankton in the surface ocean phosphate cycling to allow assessment that is more accurate and detection of future changes in ocean phosphate dynamics. Additional samples collected on cruise JR15007 were funded by NERC Grant NE/L004216/1 ‘A nutrient and carbon pump over mid-ocean ridges (RidgeMix) lead by Principal Investigator Professor Jonathan Sharples. The third party dataset provided by Dr Oliver Wurl were funded by the US National Science Foundation, Division of Ocean Sciences (Grants OCE 0929573 and OCE 0926092 to Professor G.Cutter).

Explanation
BODC protocols are based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model enabling BODC to iterate towards compliance with the on-going evolution and development of community requirements including FAIR (Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,Reusable), TRUST (Transparency, Responsibility, User community, Sustainability, Technology) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics). Data managers quality assure submissions and assemble the metadata necessary for curation. Submissions (as received) are placed in a long-term accession and stored in triplicate across multiple sites. Appropriate data are transferred into a standard internal format with source variable names mapped to controlled vocabularies, documentation assembled, and metadata loaded into BODC databases. Access to these data is through direct request, the BODC website and through partner repositories such as SeaDataNet. Access control is attained by assigning a data policy to each set of data and this policy is used to administer access when data are requested. Discovery metadata is aligned with EU INSPIRE (through MEDIN) and SeaDataNet community standards. Data are converted to open community formats including Ocean Data View ASCII and SeaDataNet NetCDF, with data described using terms from the NERC vocabulary server. BODC submission agreements are documented on the BODC website and customer service is assured with a dedicated requests team that serve data following local regulations including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004.

Statement

This dataset was created by scientists under the 'Zinc, iron and phosphorus co-limitation in the ocean (ZIPLOC)', NERC standard grant NE/N001079/1 which runs from January 2017 to January 2019. In-house data processing and quality control procedures were applied to the dataset. The data were provided to the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) for long-term archive and data publication.

Instrument(s) used to collect data: fluorometers; flow cytometers; nutrient analysers; CTD; shipboard incubators.
