Heat flow United Kingdom version 1

The dataset portrays heat flow as a continuous modelled surface, interpolated between observation points. Onshore coverage is provided for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The British Geological Survey (BGS) Heat flow dataset version 1 (United Kingdom) is derived from a catalogue of legacy heat flow observations and ground-heat modelling. Heat flow data is typically used to determine temperatures beneath the ground surface, and model how much thermal energy may be stored in or recovered from the ground. The dataset is presented as a raster model, but is also available as cellular, vector grids. The raster and square-cellular grid defines each cell by an area of c. 4km2 (2km per side). The hexagonal-cellular defines each cell by an area of c. 2.56km2 (1km per side). Heat flow values are milli-Watts per square metre (mWm-2). The data are available under BGS data licence.

Statement
The heat flow version 1 is an interpolated model from 212 heat flow measurements (augmented by 504 heat flow estimates) previously published by BGS. Estimations of temperatures with depth were made from the heat flow values contained the BGS Geothermal catalogue (version 1). The heat flow data set was created in ESRI’s Arcview GIS, using the spatial analyst extension to interpolate the input data (via an Inverse Distance-Weighted model). The raster grid is based on a 2km x/y dimension (originally using a British National Grid projection). The raster grid was converted to a vector cellular grids using ESRI’s ArcPro3.2 GIS. The square vector cell mimics the 2km x/y/ dimensions of the original raster (and retains the British National Grid projection). The hexagonal vector cell has side length of 1km (and retains the British National Grid projection). All versions of the data are provided with a WGS84 projection (which will affect the reported area of the cells).
