- Statement
- These temperature maps were compiled by BGS using data created and published by Rollin, K. E., G. A. Kirby, and W. J. Rowley. Atlas of geothermal resources in Europe: UK revision. British Geological Survey technical report WK/95/7, Regional Geophysics Group, 1995: https://webapps.bgs.ac.uk/data/publications/publication.html?id=21735106. Those were based on data compiled in the latest version of the UK Geothermal Catalogue (1987) during the 1977-1991 Geothermal Energy Programme, delivered by BGS and funded by UK Department of Energy (and both its antecedents and successors), and the European Commission. Most of the temperature measurements consist of equilibrium temperatures and Bottom Hole Temperatures (BHTs) corrected for the time since circulation using the Horner (HOR) method (Horner, 1951). For all the basins, a model of the subsurface temperature was derived by convolution of the observed heat flow field with the geological/structural model of the basin and the thermal conductivity structure, using the UKGC thermal conductivity database, and assuming one-dimensional steady-state conductive heat transfer with heat production. The maps for each basin were vectorised and merged into a single layer as part of the 2025 UK Geothermal Platform project.
