A study of adaptive radiation in an intertidal marine isopod in the North Atlantic, 2015-2016
This dataset consists of the results of the genetic comparison of different species of the genus Jaera, a marine isopod, in the UK and USA. Jaera albifrons, J. forsmani, J. ischiosetosa, J. nordmanni and J. praehirsuta were collected from the underside of rocks at intertidal sites in the the UK. In the USA, J. posthirsuta, J. albifrons, J. ischiosetosa were similarly collected from sites in Maine and Massachusetts. Sample collection took place in 2015 and 2016. Sbf1 gene Restriction site Associated DNA (RAD) libraries were generated from total DNA using Illumina paired end DNA sequencing. In addition, individual microbiomes were characterised for Jaera albifrons, J. ischiosetosa, J. nordmanni, J. posthirsuta from UK populations using 16S rDNA metabarcode amplicon sequencing. The project aimed to assess parallel signatures of evolution across isolated populations and pinpoint regions of elevated genetic differentiation. All sampling and sequencing pipelines were undertaken by Marius Wenzel and Stuart Piertney (University of Aberdeen), with funding from NERC solo grant NE/M015661/1. Data are archived at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

- Explanation
- BODC protocols are based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model enabling BODC to iterate towards compliance with the on-going evolution and development of community requirements including FAIR (Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,Reusable), TRUST (Transparency, Responsibility, User community, Sustainability, Technology) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics). Data managers quality assure submissions and assemble the metadata necessary for curation. Submissions (as received) are placed in a long-term accession and stored in triplicate across multiple sites. Appropriate data are transferred into a standard internal format with source variable names mapped to controlled vocabularies, documentation assembled, and metadata loaded into BODC databases. Access to these data is through direct request, the BODC website and through partner repositories such as SeaDataNet. Access control is attained by assigning a data policy to each set of data and this policy is used to administer access when data are requested. Discovery metadata is aligned with EU INSPIRE (through MEDIN) and SeaDataNet community standards. Data are converted to open community formats including Ocean Data View ASCII and SeaDataNet NetCDF, with data described using terms from the NERC vocabulary server. BODC submission agreements are documented on the BODC website and customer service is assured with a dedicated requests team that serve data following local regulations including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004.

- Statement
- This dataset was created by scientists at the University of Aberdeen School of Biological Sciences, following their in-house data processing and quality control procedures. The data were then archived at the National Center for Biotechnology and Information (NCBI), and the metadata were archived at the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC). BODC created the discovery metadata record which provides details of the dataset location at NCBI.Instrument(s) used to collect data: autoanalysers.
