This is bryophyte species distribution data from a survey of the city of Edinburgh UK. The survey was conducted on a structured monad by monad basis and comprises 5551 observations from 138 1 x 1 km squares and 272 taxa collected between 2015 and 2024 and provides a comprehensive survey of bryophyte species distribution. Much of the data is listed at finer resolution (100 x 100, or 10 x 10m) and includes habitats. This data is part of the Botanical Society of Scotland SCIO project which records the Urban Flora of Scotland. The dataset contains monthly measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence measured using a Walz MINI-PAM II. The chlorophyll flouresence of growing tips of moss samples were measured following saturating pulses three times in the field before dark adaptation three further measurements. Yield of photosystem II, non-photochemical quenching and electron transport rate were calculated. Field work was carried out approximately monthly from April 2017 until September 2018. The dataset contains a key to species and locations of moss samples and water samples collected along with relative water contents for moss samples. The stable carbon (13C/12C) and oxygen (18O/17O) composition of cellulose is presented, along with the stable oxygen (18O/17O) and hydrogen (2H/1H) isotope compositions of fresh water and water samples distilled from moss tissue. Soil temperature was monitored at 5 soil sampling times and ambient air temperature was monitored at each site throughout the field season. The sampling sites were: Bare soil at higher elevations, namely Observation Bluff, Factory Bluffs, Jane Col and lower parts of Spindrift Col; Soils from below mosses on the Backslope and on Moss Braes. Soils from below higher plant species at Bernsten Point, Factory Bluffs, Moss Braes and North Point. Orthinogenic soils from around penguin colonies at Gourlay Peninsula, Spindrift Rocks and North Point and disturbed soil from around Signy Base.

This database contains information on the herbarium specimens held in the herbarium of the British Antarctic Survey (international code AAS) as well as information about specimens collected in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic and held in other world herbaria. There are over 70 000 records, predominantly of mosses and lichens, but also of vascular plants, ferns, fungi and algae collected in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions as well as some from surrounding continents, particularly South America. The collection from South Georgia And The South Sandwich Islands started in 1775 and from Antarctica in 1834. Documents relating to the Herbarium are kept in the BAS Archives (LS2/4).
