  • This dataset contains baseline soil carbon and nitrogen content within a native forest creation site on the Beldorney Estate, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 17 samples were collected on a 100 m grid at the site prior to planting. The 100 m grid was extended into adjacent grassland that won’t be planted and 8 additional samples were collected. The 100 m grid samples were all collected in September 2022. Within the planting area 17 plots were left unplanted, these will be used to track natural tree regeneration, and additional soil samples were collected here in November 2022. Soil carbon and nitrogen content will be tracked at the site as the planted and naturally regenerating trees establish. The work was supported by Natural Environment Research Council (NE/W004976/1) as part of the Agile Initiative at the Oxford Martin School and Leverhulme Trust as part of the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery at the University of Oxford. • The dataset contains results of analysis of soil cores taken from a commercial Miscanthus bioenergy plantation located near Lincolnshire. Measurements are provided for each soil core (and separated increments to a maximum depth of 1 m) including soil carbon, soil moisture, root, and stone volume and bulk density. Samples were taken prior to (2011) and after (2016) remedial tillage activities (conducted in 2013). The dataset also includes samples from a paired arable control field (sampled in 2011) and a paired un-tilled Miscanthus field (sampled in 2016). Data from 2011 covers surface soil (0-30 cm) and data for 2016 covers soil profile to a depth of 1 m in 10 cm increments. • This dataset contains the carbon and nitrogen content of soil organic matter fractions collected along grassland-to-forest conversion chronosequences. Four chronosequences of grassland-to-forest conversion were used across Scotland, from Alyth to Craik. Soil samples were collected in summer 2018. Soil samples were collected using soil corers. In 2020, soil samples were fractionated in the laboratory, and the elemental composition of bulk soil and soil fraction samples was determined. The goal of the study was to determine the changes in the quantity of soil organic carbon and nitrogen, and the form in which these carbon and nitrogen are stored. • This dataset contains information on the carbon and nitrogen content of varying permafrost soil types and layers sampled from the North West Territories and Yukon, Canada in 2019 and 2020. Samples analysed include turbels, orthels and histels from drained lakes, non-lake (alluvial and till) and yedoma deposits including active layer and both organic and mineral permafrost (where appropriate). • The dataset contains the radiocarbon age of soil organic matter fractions collected along grassland-to-forest conversion chronosequences across Scotland. Soil samples were collected in summer 2018. In summer 2019, soil samples were fractionated and the radiocarbon age of bulk soil and soil fraction samples determined by accelerator mass spectrometry.
