The dataset results from a multi-disciplinary geological and geotechnical survey, carried out on contract for the Department of the Environment, to aid planning in an area of south Essex. This area had been designated for urban and transport developments to accompany the construction of a proposed third London Airport on Maplin Sands. The major part of the dataset comprises borehole logs and the results of in-situ and laboratory geotechnical tests, together with interpretative maps and sections. There is also data from palaeontological and mineralogical studies and geophysical surveys. The data is not currently available in digital format.

The database contains colour and black and white prints and negatives of satellite images of the UK and various locations scattered around the world. It includes data from the Landsat, SPOT, Radarsat and ERS satellites. Negatives include single scenes and subsampled mosaics.

Analyses carried out mainly on Conodonts, but includes some foraminifera and ostracods. 10 volumes. Numbers used Mil(C)1-1079. The Carboniferous and Permian are included. Sample no, locality & geological information and in some cases identifications are given.

The database contains satellite images of the UK purchased by the BGS or on its behalf by NERC. It includes data from the Landsat, Spot and Radarsat satellites. The images are stored in proprietary formats on various types of magnetic media. Estimate of extent of coverage. Entire country is covered by the dataset, however, there are gaps in coverage from individual sensors.

The Mineral Reconnaissance Programme (MRP), funded by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI), carried out mineral exploration reconnaissance in Great Britain between 1972 and 1997. Its main aim was to stimulate private-sector exploration and the development of indigenous mineral resources. The programme provided geological, geochemical, geophysical, mineralogical and metallogenic information on prospective areas in Britain. Work was carried out at various scales, from regional reconnaissance surveys or appraisal, to the drilling of a geochemical or geophysical anomaly. Projects were multidisciplinary, and used a combination of tried and tested methods, together with innovative techniques arising from research and development programmes. By the end of the Programme in 1997, 146 MRP reports had been issued covering localities across Great Britain. The programme was very successful in that more than half the projects reported attracted significant commercial follow-up resulting in the discovery of many new prospects. The reports are available to download via the NERC Open Research Archive (NORA).

**This dataset has been withdrawn and is no longer avaible from BGS** The database contains satellite images of the UK purchased by the BGS or on its behalf by NERC. It includes data from the Lansdat, SPOT, Radarsat and ERS satellites. The images are stored in proprietary format on various types of magnetic media. The data are currently stored by path-row scene numbers and as mosaics on tapes, CDs and drives. Entire UK is covered by the dataset, however, there are gaps in coverage from individual sensors. Coverage exists for countries (or parts of countries) where work has been carried out.

This dataset comprises reports and associated project documentation from mineral exploration projects undertaken in Great Britain under the Mineral Exploration and Investigation Grants Act (MEIGA). The collection includes reports from approximately 267 mineral exploration projects carried out between 1971 and 1984 by external mineral exploration companies under grant funding administered by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The Mineral Exploration and Investment Grants Act 1972 was introduced to stimulate mineral exploration in Great Britain through the provision of government grants for exploration targeting non-ferrous metals, fluorspar, barium minerals and potash. The programme contributed to a number of significant mineral discoveries and developments, including the Gairloch copper–zinc–gold deposit, the Parys Mountain copper–lead–zinc deposit and the Hemerdon tungsten–tin deposit. The MEIGA report collection includes geological and exploration data generated during project activities, including geological mapping, soil and stream sediment geochemistry, geophysical survey data, drill core logs and analytical assay data. The reports are held by the British Geological Survey (BGS) on behalf of the former Department of Trade and Industry. All reports are held in hard copy and are available on open file. Associated geological materials collected during the programme are available for viewing through the BGS core store booking process. Spatial information on MEIGA project areas is available through BGS GeoIndex. The scanned reports are available on the UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC) website (with full text search capability), the National Geoscience Data Centre Deposited Data Search and spatially through the BGS Geoindex.

The Mineral Reconnaissance Programme (MRP), funded by the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) carried out baseline mineral exploration in Great Britain between 1972 and 1997. Its main aim was to stimulate private-sector exploration and the development of indigenous mineral resources. It has been subsumed into the new BGS Minerals Programme, also funded by the DTI. The Programme provides information and advice to industry, enables technology transfer and promotes wealth creation through the effective sustainable development of Britain's mineral resources. The database contains information from the MRP together with some from earlier programmes and the new Minerals Programme. Information from the early 1970s was largely concerned with the search for uranium and base-metals, while since the 1980s gold and platinum-group elements (PGEs) have dominated. A range of pathfinder elements have also been determined. Data is held on the geochemistry of drainage stream sediments, panned concentrates, soil, deep overburden, rock and drillcore samples. All geochemical results are used to populate corporate Geochemistry Database.

The register lists Lower Palaeozoic microfaunas (including "small shelly" faunas), but occasionally mentions small trilobites and various fragments. SAQ1-259 are used, although several numbers have no details assigned to them. Sample number, sheet number, NGR, fossil identification, borehole names & depths are given.

Records of some 3500 waste sites in England and Wales identified by BGS as part of a survey carried out on behalf of the Department of the Environment in 1973. Information is included on the extent of the site, geology, wastes and risks to aquifers It should be noted that the assessments were carried out when the data was collected and may not reflect current interpretation. There are not records for all of the sites listed.
