Belowground component and soil data for a tropical savanna following invasion by Urochloa brizantha, Cerrado region, Brazil, 2022
This dataset contains measurements of aboveground biomass, belowground organ biomass, belowground bud bank density, root biomass, soil fertility, and soil carbon and nitrogen stocks from invaded and non-invaded vegetation patches of a tropical savanna (Cerrado). Sampling was conducted in an area invaded by Urochloa brizantha, where invaded and non-invaded patches were paired, totaling 10 patches with 2 plots each. The study site is located within the Estação Ecológica de Itirapina, a natural reserve in southeastern Brazil, spanning the municipalities of Brotas and Itirapina, São Paulo State. Data were collected during a field campaign in November 2022. The dataset was generated to assess the effects of the invasive grass Urochloa brizantha on the belowground components of open Cerrado ecosystems, with a focus on the bud bank, biomass allocation among belowground organs, and soil properties. - Statement
- Aboveground biomass was collected in 0.25 m2 plots and sorted by growth form, invasive and non-invasive, and dead material. Belowground biomass was sampled from the same plots to 30 cm depth, and organs were washed, classified by type, and live buds counted under a stereomicroscope. Roots and soil samples were collected with a 5 cm auger every 10 cm down to 1 m depth. Soil samples were analysed at ESALQ/USP for chemical fertility and total C and N. Biomass samples were oven-dried (80 degrees) to constant weight and expressed in g/m2. Bud density was expressed as buds/m2. Soil C and N stocks were derived from bulk density and concentration data. All data were checked for transcription errors, unit consistency, and laboratory quality control.
