Emperor penguin colony locations derived from satellite remote sensing across Antarctica, 2023
This dataset comprises locational data highlighting the geographic position of emperor penguin colonies along the circumpolar Antarctic coastline as identified from satellite imagery (Sentinel2 and MAXAR VHR (Very High Resolution)) from August to December 2023.
This dataset is part of the long-term monitoring of emperor penguin colonies and will support conservation efforts in Antarctica.
This dataset was supported by NERC core funding and WWF grant GB095701.

Methodology:
Location data derived form satellite remote sensing - namely Sentinel2 and MAXAR VHR data, between 1st August and 31st December 2023 (see Fretwell et al. 2021 for extended methodology). Locations edited in ArcMap as shapefiles and converted to kml.
The dataset includes colony names, latitude and longitude coordinates of colonies local across the circumpolar Antarctic coastline. The dataset is in the projection WGS 1984.
Data quality:
The data are correct to within 2 km at the time of digitisation. However, emperor penguin colonies move, both within a season and over the course of different seasons, so this should be taken as a snapshot of locations at this time.
