Monthly measurements of major and trace elements in 41 rivers in Great Britain, 2017, from the LOCATE project
This dataset contains monthly measurements of major and trace elements from 41 rivers around Great Britain. The samples were collected as part of the Land Ocean Carbon TransfEr (LOCATE) project during 2017 and they were analysed using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). LOCATE was a multi-disciplinary NERC project that undertook coordinated sampling of the major rivers in Great Britain to establish how much carbon from soils is getting into rivers and estuaries and to determine what is happening to it. It involved the National Oceanography Centre, the British Geological Survey, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, with assistance from the University of Lancaster, University of Durham, University of Hull, the University of the Highlands and Islands and the Environment Agency. - Statement
- One third of rivers in Great Britain were sampled, accounting for approximately 36 % of the catchment areas. For each river, a single visit was made once each month to collect water for analysis. Water was sampled using a bottle or bucket and then immediately filtered and/or decanted into other appropriate bottles, prior to being sent for analysis. Temperature was recorded immediately on sampled water. Conductivity was often done in situ but occasionally later in the laboratory if a field instrument was not available. The ICP-MS analysis used to measure major and trace elements is described in the Supporting Documentation. Additional information on weather and flow and state of river was also recorded. In addition to the precise location of the sampling point, the NRFA code, catchment area, land use, standardised annual rainfall, Base Flow Index, altitude and percentage of carbonate rocks in catchment are all provided in a separate file.
