Life cycle assessment carbon model to determine the net greenhouse gas balance of reforesting one hectare of goldmining-degraded soil in the Peruvian amazon
This model combines the carbon footprint of a reforestation project in the Peruvian amazon with a biomass model of the growing trees and a soil carbon model. The script aims at estimating the net carbon capture potential of a growing forest located in the Peruvian amazon and on degraded sandy soil only. It compares the emissions associated with setting up a reforestation plot (from seed reception to seedling transplant) with the expected carbon capture by the growing trees and increased soil carbon stock at a desired timescale. The model includes the production, use, and degradation of biochar. This model was produced within the Soils-R-GGREAT project, funded by NERC. Full details about this application can be found at

- Statement
- LCA activity and soil and characteristics were provided by the ‘Centro de Innovacion Cientifica Amazonica’ (CINCIA), a non-profit organization located in the Peruvian amazon. Emission factors were collected in the EcoInvent 3.7 and U.S. Life Cycle Inventory (USLCI) databases in SimaPro software v8.3. Soil carbon stock changes over time was modelled using the Rohamsted Carbon (RothC) model found inside the SoilR package in R. The above-ground carbon model uses the moist forest, non-plantation model reported in Busch et al. (2019) (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-019-0485-x), which simulates tropical secondary forests above-ground growth based on data from 829 tropical forest stands. The below-ground carbon model has an evolving root to shoot ratio over time, specific for tropical forests from Waring and Powers (2017). Meteorological data were extracted from the FAO, ClimWat database. All the data necessary to the model are embedded in the model script.
