Rock-Eval: Freeze dried and powdered samples (approximately 60 mg dry weight) were heated at 300 °C for 3 min, followed by a 25 °C/min heat increase from 300 °C to 650 °C in a N2 atmosphere. Residual carbon was oxidised at 300–850 °C at a rate of 20 °C/min. Hydrocarbons released were measured using a flame ionization detector while CO and CO2 were measured using an infra-red cell. Palynology: 5 g of crushed sample material was broken down using HCl (36%) and HF acid (40%) to dissolve and decant carbonates and silicates. After neutralisation w the remaining kerogen was sieved on a 10 ?m nylon mesh and strew mounted on microslides using Elvacite™ 4345. Vitrinite reflectance: Aliquots of the kerogen isolates obtained using the palynological preparation protocol were strewn on a PTFE treated cover slip and mounted on a microslide using Metprep™ Kleer-Set polyester resin.
