ERA5 daily downscaled surface air temperature and snowfall at two Cordillera Darwin high elevation sites 2000 - 2022 CE

This dataset presents ERA5 daily downscaled surface air temperature and snowfall from two sites next to the first ice core drilled from Cordillera Darwin, Chile. These records were presented in Tetzner et al. (2025) to study regional-to-local environmental conditions at the firn core site. These local surface air temperature and snowfall estimations suggest the icefield has been progressively exposed to surface melt conditions, but not enough to produce significant melt at the firn core site.

This dataset was created with the support of the Dieter R Tetzner's National Geographic Early Career Grant 2019.

Statement

Methodology:

The downscaling scheme (DOWN) combined statistical downscaling with radiation and orographic precipitation modelling and was applied to ERA5 atmospheric parameters to produce high spatial resolution (200x200m grid cell) climate variables for the CDB site (DOWN-DRILL). The use of this downscaling routine to generate high spatial resolution climate variables was thoroughly implemented and validated in the Cordillera Darwin Region in Temme et al. (2023). Data used in this study was generated with the same inputs as detailed in Temme et al. (2023).Temme, F., Farias-Barahona, D., Seehaus, T., Jana, R., Arigony-Neto, J., Gonzalez, I. & Furst, J. J. (2023). Strategies for regional modeling of surface mass balance at the Monte Sarmiento Massif, Tierra del Fuego. The Cryosphere, 17(6), 2343-2365.

Data collection:

The dataset was generated using Temme et al. (2023) ERA5 downscaling method. Temme, F., Farias-Barahona, D., Seehaus, T., Jana, R., Arigony-Neto, J., Gonzalez, I. & Furst, J. J. (2023). Strategies for regional modeling of surface mass balance at the Monte Sarmiento Massif, Tierra del Fuego. The Cryosphere, 17(6), 2343-2365.

Data quality:

The ERA5 daily downscaled dataset was generated following the downscaling method presented in Temme et al. (2025). Temme, F., Sommer, C., Schaefer, M., Jana, R., Arigony-Neto, J., Gonzalez, I., ... & Furst, J. J. (2025). Climate's firm grip on glacier ablation in the Cordillera Darwin Icefield, Tierra del Fuego. Nature Communications, 16(1), 2677.
