Raw acoustic data collected by an EK80 echosounder at King George Island on board the RRS Sir David Attenborough cruise SD025 (25 February 2023)

Acoustic backscatter data were collected on board the RRS Sir David Attenborough during polar science trials 2023 (cruise SD025) on 25/02/2023 in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica.

Data were collected using a Simrad EK80 echosounder at 18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz. The EK80 was calibrated on 10/03/2023 in the Weddell Sea.

This work was supported by NERC core funding to BAS.

Statement

Methodology:

The dataset comprises Simrad EK80 raw format data files that have not undergone any processing or quality checking. Each data file contains approximately 2 minutes of data and is approximately 518 MB in size. Each data file contains raw ping data with associated GPS fixes and date/time.

In order to process the data, 3 files in the TOML syntax language are supplied:

- transect file (defines the start and end times for a given transect, list the raw and environmental files making up the transect, and references to associated metadata and calibration files)

- water column active acoustic metadata file (compliant with ICES. 2016, a metadata convention for processed acoustic data from active acoustic systems, SISP 4 TG-AcMeta Version 1.10, ICES WGFAST Topic Group, TG-AcMeta. 47 pp.)

- calibration file (calibration data and metadata ((compliant with ICES. 2016, a metadata convention for processed acoustic data from active acoustic systems, SISP 4 TG-AcMeta Version 1.10, ICES WGFAST Topic Group, TG-AcMeta. 47 pp.)

Data collection:

Data were collected using a Simrad EK80 echosounder at 18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz.

Data quality:

Raw data (time, gps and acoustic) are not quality checked. The instrument was calibrated on 10/03/2023 in the Weddell Sea.
