Camera trap monitoring of grey squirrel, red fox and roe deer in Glasgow, 2024

This dataset contains information on grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) identified from camera trap images in 24 open spaces in Glasgow from April to September 2024, along with information describing the detection zone of camera traps and movement speed calculated from video files in a subset of open spaces from June to December 2024. Additionally, a file is present describing the mean number of domestic dogs at each camera for every month along with a file showing set-up and take-down times of each camera at each site. Data was collected by the GALLANT (Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation) WP2 team as part of a study aiming to validate visual biodiversity surveys performed by the Glasgow City Council. Statement
Data were generated by running images through an AI identification software ("CameraTrapDetectoR"), which informed whether images contained a mammal, bird, human, vehicle or was empty. Images which contained a human, vehicle or were empty were removed from further analysis. Remaining images were identified by eye and images of grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were filtered into the files presented here. Video analysis was done in the field, discarding images not of the three aforementioned species, as well as rabbit (Oryctolagus cunciculus). Detection zone calculations were done with assistance from the photo-editing software Canva. Domestic dogs were counted for one week, per camera, per month and averaged.
