Annual measurements of body mass for chinstrap penguin chicks at Signy Island, from 1997 to 2020.
This datasets captures the annual measurements of body mass for chinstrap penguin chicks at Signy Island, from 1997 to 2020. Between 50 to 100 chicks are measured, with 3-5 weighing sessions carried out in the period before fledging is complete. This monitoring contributes to the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) and is part of annual monitoring carried out by the British Antarctic Survey.
This work was funded by Natural Environment Research Council (UK) core funding to the British Antarctic Survey.

Methodology:
Body mass of chinstrap penguin fledglings is measured annually on Signy Island following CCAMLR CEMP Standard Method A7A. Weighing takes place in January and begins when the total number of chicks in monitored creches begin to fall and chicks are observed gathering on beaches prior to departure to sea. A specially designed net is used to safely capture each bird before carefully placing it into a weighing bag. Each fledgling is then measured to the nearest 50 g using a spring balance and subsequently gently removed from the bag before being marked with non-permanent stock marker on their chest to avoid recapture. This process is repeated for approximately 50-100 chicks in each colony, usually over a minimum of 3 sessions, or every 5 days until fledgling is complete.
Data collection:
Instruments:
Hand-net
Weighing bag
Non-permanent stock spray
Data quality:
Accuracy within 50-100 g
Sessions are ideally repeated every 5 days, but some years a total of three sessions can be carried out before fledging is complete.
GPS coordinates are of surveyed colonies in this dataset that were measured with GPS devices.
There is no data for chinstrap chicks in the 2020/2021 as the base had to close early.
