Digital Elevation Models and Basal Melt Maps of Pine Island Glacier Ice Shelf using CryoSat-2 Surface Elevation data, 2011-2023
This dataset provides Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and Lagrangian Basal Melt Maps of Pine Island Glacier. DEMs were created using CryoSat-2 SARIn swath processed surface elevation data and cover 2011-2023. Melt Maps were calculated using the Lagrangian method using ITS_LIVE annual velocity datasets and cover 2012-2022.

Methodology:
DEMs were created using a time-centering method applied to CryoSat-2 SARIn swath processed surface elevation measurements. The dataset contains monthly DEMs, though data within 6 months of the posted month have been used. DEMs have a spatial resolution of 250 m. Elevation is given as height above the WGS84 ellipsoid. Basal melt maps have been calculated using the Lagrangian method. Advection and divergence in this equation were taken from ITS_LIVE annual datasets and surface mass balance changes from RACMO model outputs. Melt maps are also at a 250 m spatial resolution.
CryoSat-2 SARIn data was accessed in March 2023.
ITS_LIVE velocity data prior to 2019 was downloaded in October 2023, using v1. Datasets from 2019 were downloaded in June 2024 and v2 are used.
RACMO2.3p2 output forced the IMAU-FDM v1.2A firn model.
Data quality:
Although the data is posted monthly, each DEM contains a years worth of CryoSat-2 elevation observations which have been time centred on the given month. Each melt map contains a combination of 3 year's worth of elevation data.
In the earlier parts (prior to 2014) of the dataset, some areas of the ice shelf are missing. This is because of a lack of accurate velocity data in these areas.
Missing values are expressed as NaN in the netCDF files.
