The imagery was acquired from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Global Visualization Viewer (Glovis), available at http://glovis.usgs.gov/. ENVI 4.7 was used for processing and gap filling of the imagery. Visual interpretation based on shape, color, proximity to features and texture was used to digitize suspected forest encroachment using ArcGIS 9.3.1. The data have not been validated; therefore some of the clearings are likely due to natural disturbances such as landslides, flooding, natural fires or tree falls.
