Borehole data from George VI Ice Shelf

Year-long mooring dataset from beneath George VI Ice Shelf between January 2012 and January 2013. Contains turbulence mooring data from two instruments initially at 2.57 m and 13.57 m beneath the ice base. High resolution 3D velocity data and temperature data at two instruments are included, as well as low-resolution thermistor data.

The processing of this data was funded by a grant from the Natural Environment Research Council, NE/L002507/1.

Statement

Methodology:

Data collected in 2012 by a team led by Keith Nicholls. Data processed and analysed by Leo Middleton and Peter Davis.

Turbulent velocity fluctuations in the ice shelf-ocean boundary layer beneath

George VI Ice Shelf were observed using two turbulence instrument clusters (TICs)

deployed 2.57 m and 13.57 m beneath the ice shelf base in January 2012. Each TIC

sampled the velocity fluctuations at a rate of 5 Hz, and were operated in burst

mode with 15 minutes of data being collected every two hours. 4443 bursts were

collected over a period of 366 days. 400 bursts failed the quality control

checks, and were removed from the dataset. The TICs were deployed as part of the

UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Sub Ice Shelf Boundary Layer

Experiment.

Data collection:

Modular Acoustic Velocity Sensor (MAVS), MicroSquid Thermistor, Thermistor Chain, Upward Looking Sonar.

Data quality:

Data have been extracted and processed. Data points with insufficient sampling rate have been removed. High resolution temperature data at upper instrument is included but likely not reliable. The velocity components have an uncertainty of 0.6 mm/s. The temperature data has an uncertainty of 0.1°C.
