Anak Krakatau 2018 volcanic eruption - volcanic ash sample analysis (NERC Grant NE/T002026/1)

The data provides a summary of volcanic ash samples collected from around Anak Krakatau, Indonesia, in August 2019, originating from the December 2018 eruption. The ash was generated in eruptions immediately following the sector collapse of Anak Krakatau. The data provides a summary of sample locations, brief information on the sample context (original notebook entries for the field sites, alongside summary stratigraphic descriptions), componentry information for selected ash samples, laser-diffraction grain-size information for the ash samples, whole rock XRF compositional analysis of selected samples, and EPMA mineral analyses from selected samples.

Statement
Grain-size data: Laser-diffraction using Malvern MasterSizer 2000 XRF: Analysed using the PANalytical Axios Advanced spectrometer at the University of Leicester. Major elements measured on glass beads fused from ignited powders; trace elements on pressed powder pellets. Results stated as component oxide weight percent and recalculated to include loss on ignition (LOI), which was separately determined. EPMA Glass compositional analyses: JEOL JXA-8600 wavelength-dispersive electron probe microanalyser (EPMA) at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford; 15 kV accelerating voltage, 8 nA beam current, and 10 ?m beam diameter. EPMA Mineral compositional analyses: Cameca SX100 EPMA at the University of Bristol; 20 kV accelerating voltage, 20 nA beam current and 1 ?m spot size. Na analysed first; primary mineral standards used for calibration.
