Ground penetrating radar data from the Larsen C Ice Shelf, 2014 and 2015
This archive is a suite of ground penetrating radar (GPR) data acquired by Project MIDAS during field campaigns on Larsen C, in 2014 and 2015. All data were acquired with a Sensors&Software pulsEKKO PRO GPR system, fitted with antennas of 200 MHz centre-frequency. The system was towed behind a snowmobile, with distances recorded with GPS.
These data are part of the NERC-funded MIDAS ('Impact of surface melt and ponding on ice shelf dynamics and stability') research project, with grant references NE/L006707/1 and NE/L005409/1. Other MIDAS data are available.

Methodology:
There are three types of data contained in the archive:
- Flowline data: long profiles of 200 MHz acquisitions starting in Cabinet Inlet and Whirlwind Inlet, and following ice flow towards the calving front.
- Grid data: at each of 5 camps, between 4 and 6 profiles in a grid orentiation (individual profiles are referred to as G1, G2, G3, etc). Camps along the Cabinet and Whirlwind flowlines are denoted by prefixes CI and WI respectively, with a numerical value denoting the distance in kilometres from the grounding line in each inlet.
Each major gridline is ~16 km long, and separated by ~1.5 km.
- CMP data: at all camps except CI-0, CMP data are available for constraint of GPR velocity analysis.
A map of all these data locations is provided.
Data collection:
All data were acquired with a Sensors&Software pulsEKKO PRO GPR system, fitted with antennas of 200 MHz centre-frequency.
Data quality:
Note that to avoid rounding errors in the .sgy file, distances in these files are expressed in cm rather than m. The .sgy file will also assume that the nanosecond time axis is actually in milliseconds, although the numerical value remains the same. GPS data stored in the .sgy file header are in UTM coordinates.
