Triazine, organophosphate and pyrethroid (TOP) pesticide data from rivers [LOIS]
Triazine, organophosphate and pyrethroid (TOP) pesticide data from river water collected at various sites within the Humber catchment area as part of the Land Ocean Interaction Study project (LOIS).. Water samples were collected weekly and during storm periods between 1994 and 1996. The unfiltered samples were extracted on the day of collection using solid-phase-extraction (SPE), the SPE cartridges stored overnight at 4 degreesC and then transported to the Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IFE), Wareham for elution, drying and Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis. Pesticides measured were Atrazine, Cyanazin, Desmetryn, Fenitrothion, HCH gamma, Malathion, Parathion, Permethrin, Prometryn, Simazine, Terbutryn. The sampling and extraction of the pesticides was carried out by the LOIS team at York University and the elution and sample preparation for GC analysis was done at IFE. - Statement
- Samples were collected in presolvent washed 1 litre borosilicate bottles from the midpoint in the channel by immersion. The samples were returned to the LOIS York Laboratory for separation by passage through frits (Isolute 120-1008F) and spe columns (1 g C18, Isolute 221-0100-C) according to SOP 17/14.11.93 (IFE, Wareham). The samples were stored overnight at 5 C and transported to IFE, Wareham for elution using ethylacetate (EtAc) with the eluate from the filtered solids and water combined following SOP 24/20.4.94 (IFE, Wareham). Extracts were dried and concentrated using nitrogen. Triazines and Organophosphorus pesticides were analysed using nitrogen-phosphate bead detector (Perkin Elmer) and the Pyrethroids by GC/MS in single ion mode (Hewlett-Packard). Blank water samples (ultrapure water) were taken into the field during sample collection and opened and closed on site and then analysed in the same way as the other samples. Spiked water samples containing all the pecticides were included in each batch to enable checks on the pesticide recoveries. Internal standards were included in the GC analysis: ametryn for GC/NPD and Decachlorbiphenol for GC/MS. Triazines and organochlorine compounds were identified by their relative retention time (RRT) with respect to ametryn (+/- 0.002 RRT) and on some samples these were verified by concentration of the samples and GC/MS. Their RRT and coincidence of the base ion and one other ion fragment identified the pyrethroids. A zip file of box-and-whisker plots for each determinand is available, showing the range of values (median, inter-quartile range, 1.5 * inter-quartile range, outliers) recorded at each site to enable prospective users to understand data quality.
