Land cover of Signy Island, consisting of rock outcrop, moraine, lakes, permanent ice and streams, digitised from February 2020 satellite imagery
Land cover of Signy Island, consisting of rock outcrop, moraine, lakes, permanent ice and streams. All data were manually digitised from a VHR (very high resolution) satellite image acquired on the 10th February 2020. WorldView-2 satellite image (c) 2020 Maxar Technologies.
The datasets are available as polygon and point shapefiles and GeoPackages.
The data were created to support the updated release of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Signy Island map (BAS, 2024)

Methodology:
The data were manually digitised from a VHR (very high resolution) satellite image acquired on the 10th February 2020. WorldView-2 satellite image (c) 2020 Maxar Technologies. The VHR image was licensed from Maxar with 4 bands. In ArcGIS Pro v3.3.0, an RGB composite was created and this was pansharpened using the higher spatial resolution (50 cm) panchromatic band. This pansharpened composite was then orthorectified to a 5 m Digital Elevation Model extracted from stereo VHR imagery acquired in March 2015. WorldView-3 satellite image (c) 2015 Maxar Technologies.
Also in ArcGIS Pro, the land cover was manually digitised from the orthorectified, pansharpened image. The data creator's interpretation was used in this process and the accuracy cannot be guaranteed for all areas. Moraine and rock outcrop is particularly difficult to distinguish in certain locations. Some of the lakes are ephemeral and will not be present at all times of year or in every year. The streams were digitised in the same way and should always originate from either a lake or an area of permanent ice. The land cover and streams are clipped to a coastline of Signy Island, selected from the Antarctic Digital Database high resolution vector polygons of the Antarctic coastline, https://doi.org/10.5285/9b4fab56-4999-4fe1-b17f-1466e41151c4
The coordinate reference system of the data is UTM Zone 23S, EPSG 32723.
The land cover dataset has an attribute field named 'surface' detailing the type of surface it is showing (rock, ice, lake, moraine) and another field named 'Name' which gives the name of the Lake, if named, with these selected from the UK Antarctic Place-names Committee gazetteer, accessed 20th June 2024.
Data collection:
Processing done using ArcGIS Pro (version 3.3.0)
Data quality:
The data has been manually interpreted and may contain misinterpretations. The data creator used their best knowledge of the island and with some assistance from those who have visited the island in recent years, but there may still be some errors.
