2001 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA2 North Sea Survey Leg-3 Cruise Report (Vigilance)
This report describes fieldwork operations of the North Sea Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA2) Survey, Leg 3 (crests survey) conducted for he Department of Trade and Industry (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) from R/V Vigilance between 14 and 22 June 2001. The survey objectives were to carry out quantitative seabed sampling and seabed photography in SEA2 Survey Area 1 (sand bank / wave study areas, off the Norfolk coast). The report contains a brief description of seabed appearance and epifauna. 82 samples were collected.

- The SEAs data were produced as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme; Crown Copyright, all rights reserved. The DECC SEA must be acknowledged in any maps or publications that make use of the data. All the data files are freely available to the public. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) data portal provides free access to available data and reports which have been produced through the SEA process. The site is run and managed by BGS on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Many files can be downloaded directly from this website. Those that are too large to download can be ordered via the website for postal delivery from BGS. BGS (NERC) has been contracted by DECC to publish SEA datasets on its behalf. All intellectual property rights (including , without limitation, copyrights, database rights and all other rights which subsist or may at any time in the future subsist in the Dataset(s)) in the Dataset(s) ('Intellectual Property Rights') are owned by DECC (formerly the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform). BGS has been authorised by DECC to use SEA datasets for all purposes but on a 'not-for-profit basis'. - The survey was undertaken by Hartley Anderson Limited as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. Quantitative seabed sampling was carried out using a 0.1m2 Van Veen grab. Three Van Veen samples were taken from each sample location. Two replicate Van Veen samples were processed for macrofaunal analysis by sieving through nested 5mm, 1.0mm and 0.5mm mesh and fixed in 10% formalin, stained with Rose Bengal. A single sample was sub-sampled for chemical and particle size analysis, with 6cm diameter cores also taken for meiofaunal analysis at selected stations. A camera frame was deployed at each sample location or photography transect, equipped with OE1366 colour video camera, SDS3000 digital stills camera and OE1130 300W light.
