Ground-penetrating radar surveys at three nunataks in the Hudson Mountains in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica, December 2019

This dataset contains data from three ground-penetrating radar surveys undertaken to image ice thickness and englacial stratigraphy during the 2019-20 Antarctic field season, as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (funded by NERC and NSF). The ground-penetrating radar data are presented as SEG-Y, along with the GPS tracks of the surveys, presented as GPS Exchange Format (GPX). The subglacial extensions of ridges of three nunataks close to Pine Island and Larter Glaciers in the Hudson Mountains region were surveyed, with the aim of determining their suitability as subglacial bedrock drill sites. Those nunataks are Winkie Nunatak (74 degrees 51' 41.0" S/99 degrees 46' 49.4" W), Evans Knoll (74 degrees 51' 00.0" S/100 degrees 25' 00.0" W), and Webber Nunatak (74 degrees 47' 00.0" S/99 degrees 50' 00.0" W).

This work was funded by NERC grants NE/S00663X/1 and NE/S006710/1.

Statement

Methodology:

A snowmobile was used to tow a PulseEKKO 1000 ice penetrating radar (GPR) system with 200 MHz antennae mounted on a wooden Nansen sledge. The snowmobile was travelling at speeds of 3-7km/hr with the system set to continuous collection mode with an in-field stack of 4. A hand-held Garmin GPS was used to locate the position of radar survey lines. All radar data are presented in their raw, unprocessed form.

At Winkie Nunatak, a broad grid consisting of seven 400 m-long cross profiles was collected perpendicular to the ridge line. These profiles were spaced at 100 m intervals away from the visible ridge line. A detailed grid of five 300 m-long lines was then collected at 25 m intervals. At Evans Knoll six radar lines were collected perpendicular to the ridge at 7-15 m line spacing, and one line was run parallel to the ridge crest through the centre of the grid. At Webber Nunatak, eight radar lines were collected perpendicular to the ridge expression at 50 m spacing, and one line was run away from the ridge tip through the centre of the grid. The lines increased in length from 150 m to 500 m with increasing distance from bedrock, due to the orientation of the steep ice slope running northwest.

Data collection:

1. Sensors & Software PulseEKKO GPR control unit with a 200 MHz antenna.

2. Garmin GPSMap78 hand-held GPS.

Data quality:

GPS was not linked to the radar during acquisition. Hand-held Garmin GPS was used to locate the position of radar survey lines during acquisition.
