Atmospheric nitrous acid amount fraction at Halley in January and February 2022
Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) amount fraction measured in the clean air sector at Halley VI Research Station between 22 January and 3 February 2022. The data was collected using a Long Path Absorption Photometer (LOPAP), the instrument inlet height above the snow was changed during the measurement period, this is indicated in the dataset. Temperature and wind speed data were collected are included to enable the HONO flux from the snow to be calculated.
This work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council and the ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership [grant number NE/S007334/1]. The fieldwork at Halley VI Research Station was funded by the Collaborative Antarctic Science Scheme (CASS).

Methodology:
The nitrous acid (HONO) amount fraction was measured at 1 minute resolution using a Long Path Absorption Photometer (LOPAP). Data has been processed to remove interferences and account for time delays in the instrument. Regular baseline measurements (blanks) and calibrations were carried out and have been applied to the data; the blanks and calibration periods have been removed from the dataset. The HONO amount fraction is given in pmol mol-1. The inlet height column relates to the height of the inlet of the LOPAP above the snow. A value of 0 represents inlet in transit and we recommend ignoring this data. The temperature measurements were collected at 1.26 and 0.05 m above the snow surface (indicated in column headings). The data was collected at 5 second intervals and are given in oC. U and V wind vectors were collected at 1 m above the snow at 5 second intervals and are given in ms-1. The temperature and wind data were collected to allow calculation of the HONO flux from the snow by the flux gradient method. All times are UTC.
Data collection:
Instruments:
a. HONO: LOng Path Absorption Photometer (LOPAP, QUMA Elektronik & Analytik GmbH)
b. Wind: Gill Wind Observer 70
c. Temperature: TME Ethernet Thermometer
Data quality:
HONO: During the campaign the LOPAP was calibrated every 5 days using nitrite solutions of known concentration (2 x 10^-3 and 8 x 10^-4 mg L-1). The gas flow rate was set to 2 L min-1 (298 K, 1 atm) with the internal mass flow controller and checked frequently using a flow meter (DryCal DC-Lite), and the liquid flow rate through the stripping coil for each channel was regularly measured volumetrically and was between 0.15 and 0.18 mL min-1 during the measurement period. Baseline measurements were made every 6 hours using a flow of pure nitrogen (99.998 %, BOC) at the instrument inlet. The detection limit (3 sigma-blank) was 0.26 pmol mol-1 for the measurement period. Any missing values and gaps in the time series correspond to blanks and calibrations that have now been removed from the dataset.
Wind and temperature: data has not been calibrated. Missing values are caused by issues with the instruments/data collection.
