Satellite tracked GPS locations of two southern right whales tagged in South Georgia waters from January to September 2020

This dataset summarises the raw GPS locations obtained by satellite tracking of two southern right whales tagged at South Georgia island on 28th January 2020. One whale, genetically identified as a female, was tracked for 117 days (4,860 tag locations provided) and travelled ~5818km including a short period of time at the ice edge. The second whale, genetically identified as a male, was tracked for 238 days (8,492 tag locations provided) and travelled ~9,885km, including migration through the national waters of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

Statement

Methodology:

Location-only (SPOT6, Wildlife Computers, Redmond, WA USA) Argos satellite tags were deployed on southern right whales in South Georgia waters in January 2020. These tags are defined as ''Type C'' (or consolidated) implantable tags by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Tag deployment was conducted from the bow of a rigid-hulled inflatable boat using a custom-modified pneumatic line-throwing device at a distance of approximately 3-10 m from the whale. Each tagged animal was judged to be an adult or subadult based on the overall size and behaviour of the whale. Biopsy samples and photographs were collected simultaneously to tag deployment. Tagging and biopsy operations were conducted in accordance with best practice guidelines (see reference). Biopsy samples were subsequently used to identify the sex of each animal.

Data collection:

Location-only (SPOT6, Wildlife Computers, Redmond, WA USA) Argos satellite tags.

Data quality:

The data are provided here as raw Argos locations with no quality control performed. Some rows are missing information because sometimes not all information is sent to the satellite, and it may take several messages to convey all of the information. Some columns are empty because the Argos output columns are standard for all tag types, and data outputs vary depending on the sensors associated with the tag in question. See READ_ME for full data description.
