Population monitoring of Wandering Albatross on Bird Island, South Georgia, from 1976 onwards

Monitoring of Wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) nests on Bird Island began in 1958. It was carried out sporadically until 1976 when annual monitoring, including nest counts and estimations of breeding success, began in earnest. There are 25 defined areas on the island, and the number of nests has been recorded in each area since 1976. Additionally, from 1989, the hatching and breeding success has been monitored.

Methodology:

The number of nests with an adult sitting on a nest with an egg are counted on 31st January every year. This is then corrected to take account of nest failures. The corrected total number of nests on the island is the total number of nests on the island on 31st January multiplied by the correction factor. To calculate a correction factor nests on the Wanderer Ridge study area (WRSA) are monitored daily for nest failures throughout the egg laying period. The correction factor = total number nests on WRSA throughout season/number nests on WRSA on 31st January. The corrected total of nests on Bird Island is used to calculate hatching and breeding success. However, if the total number of nests staked on the island is greater than the calculated corrected total, then the total number of nests staked is used in these calculations instead. All nests are checked on 1st April for hatched chicks and then monitored on a monthly basis throughout fledging. Hatching success is calculated as: 100*(number chicks on 1st April/corrected total number nests on the island).Breeding success is calculated as: 100*(number of chicks surviving to fledge/corrected total number nests on the island).Percentage of breeders retrapped is calculated as: 100*(number breeders retrapped/(2*corrected total number of nests on the island)).

All data were collected under permit from the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

All sampling procedures used were regulated by the British Antarctic Survey Ethical Review Committee in collaboration with Cambridge University and the UK Home Office.
