Ostracod carbonate isotope data, Freshwater Pond, Barbuda (NERC grant NE/K00610X/1)

The dataset contains oxygen and carbon isotope measurements from multiple-shell samples of the ostracod Heterocypris punctata, from Core FP2 taken from Freshwater Pond, Barbuda. A chronology for the core is provided by radiocarbon dates. The data, which are further described in Burn et al. (2016) The Holocene, 26(8), 1237-47, provide a proxy for changing rainfall patterns for the period 2000-1555 CE.

Statement
Core FP2 was recovered from Freshwater Pond through ~1 m of water using a Colinvaux-Vohnout drop-hammer modified piston corer. It was extruded into 1 cm slices in the field and stored at 4°C in the lab. 2 cm3 of sediment material was taken from each of the extruded 1 cm slices and gently washed with distilled water using a 63-µm sieve to remove the fine fraction. The coarse fraction was dried overnight in an oven at 40ºC. Ostracod valves were isolated and picked from the coarse fraction using a fine nylon brush under a low-power (20x) binocular microscope under incident light and identified. Individual valves of adult specimens of the ostracod Heterocypris punctata were picked from the coarse fraction using a fine paint brush under a low-power binocular microscope. Prior to isotope analysis, ostracod valves were cleaned using a fine brush and then allowed to dry. Valves were then checked for impurities using a binocular microscope. Multiple-valve (five valves for the majority of core levels) samples were analysed using a ThermoFinnigan Delta Plus XP mass spectrometer connected to a GasBench. Oxygen and carbon isotope values are reported in standard delta notation relative to the VPDB (Vienna Pee Dee belemnite) standard, with uncertainties of 0.09‰ for δ13C and 0.20‰ for δ18O (1σ), at the Bloomsbury Environmental Isotope Facility (BEIF), University College London.
