Processed line aeromagnetic data over Northern Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula (2002/03 season)

Over 20,000 km of new aeromagnetic data were acquired over Palmer Land during the 2002-2003 Antarctic campaign. Profile lines were oriented E-W with N-S tie lines. Line spacing was 5 km, tie lines were 25 km apart and nominal flight altitude was 2800 m. Aeromagnetic processing included magnetic compensation, IGRF removal, diurnal correction, and levelling. Mean cross-over errors after microlevelling were <1 nT. Aeromagnetic data were gridded (1 km cell size) and reduced to the pole.

We present here the processed line aeromagnetic data acquired using scintrex cesium magnetometers mounted on the BAS aerogeophysical equiped Dash 7.

Data are provided as XYZ ASCII line data.

Statement

Methodology:

The SPARC aeromagnetic dataset and details on survey design and data processing are presented in Ferraccioli et al. (2006). The dataset available here includes all channels from raw through to levelled, and microlevelled products. Channel naming follows SCAR/ADMAP2 data release protocols, although the order of processing steps differs from that outlined by ADMAP2 documentation.

Magnetic data channels and processing flow:

MagR- Raw magnetic total field intensity data (nT).

MagC- Raw magnetic data corrected/cleaned for obvious tip tank events or anomalous spikes.

TCorr- Tiptank corrections (nT). These include DC shifts and gradients due to aircraft noice, etc. Dummy values if not applicable.

RefField- Geomagnetic reference field value for which the magnetic data has been compensated. IGRF model 2000 as implemented in Geosoft (nT).

MagRTC- Compensated magnetic value adjusted for tip tanks and the geomagnetic reference field.

BCorr- Low pass filtered (30 minute) magnetic base station correction.

MagBRTC- calculated as MagBRTC= MagBTC- RefField.

SCorr- Any DC shift applied.

ACorr- MagRT filtered using a low pass filter with a cut-off length of 15 fiducials to account for noise introduced by aircraft roll, pitch and yaw.

MagF- Final mag value before levelling.

MagL- Statistically levelled mag data.

MagML- Microlevelled magnetic data following technique of (Ferraccioli et al., 1998). Note tie lines are not included in the microlevelled data channel.

Basic channel description:

Line name Line Number

Flight ID Sequential flight number

x x projected meters*

y y projected meters*

Lon Longitude WGS 1984,

Lat Latitude WGS 1984,

Height_WGS1984 Aircraft altitude (meters) in WGS 1984,

Date Date of flight in time format e.g. 2006/01/08

Time Time (UTC) of flight e.g. 23:52:42.0

*Projected coordinates (x and y) are in Polar stereographic defined as follows:

Latitude of natural origin: -71

Longitude of natural origin: 0

Scale factor at natural origin -75.33333333333

False easting 0

False northing 2082760.109

Positioning for the SPARC survey uses kinematic differential GPS. Processing was carried out using GPSurvey® software. Differential positioning used fixed base stations at each of the operational camps (Ferraccioli et al., 2006). Positions are calculated for the phase centre

Data quality:

No values are given for MagC, BCorr, and SCorr. These channels are included for compatibility with ADMAP2 convention, but are not filled as were not available.
