Lake and catchment nutrient, ecology and hydrology monitoring of Rostherne Mere, Cheshire, UK (2016-2017)

This dataset includes catchment stream inflow and outflow rates, secchi depth, chlorophyll, phytoplankton counts and nutrient concentrations for the lake, inflow, outflow and groundwater spring. The measurements are from a PhD research project at Rostherne Mere in Cheshire. These data were collected to show the relationship between the catchment hydrology and in-lake nutrient loads for assessment of the current catchment nutrient budget. The monitoring study covered a period from January 2016 to January 2017. All data is presented with date, flow rate, nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations and phytoplankton species abundance. The work was carried out as part of a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded PhD [grant number NE/L002493/1]. Statement
Water samples were collected approximately every 3 weeks from the lake, main inflow, main outflow and groundwater spring, with multiple water column depth samples (6, 12, 18 and 24 m) added to collection from September 2016. Water samples were analysed for orthophosphate (soluble reactive phosphorus; SRP), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved silicate (DSi). An integrated water column sample (0-8 m) from the central lake location was collected for phytoplankton identification and chlorophyll analysis. Secchi depth at a central lake location was also recorded during each visit. Inflow and outflow discharge was determined by calculating a linear discharge relationship between cross-sectional profiles and sectional velocities recorded for a range of stage heights. This empirical stage-discharge relationship was then applied to continuous stage heights measurements recorded using a mini-diver data logger, recording water pressure every 5 minutes and calibrated to a barometer located at the lake shore. The data was collated to Excel spreadsheets held by the lead author at Loughborough University. For ingestion into the Environmental Information data was extracted from the Excel spreadsheets and converted into a comma separated file.
