Mineral major element compositions of samples from IODP Site U1601, North Atlantic Ocean

Mineral major element compositions of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene in ultramafic samples (peridotites and pyroxenites) taken from drill core recovered from IODP Site U1601 on the Atlantis Massif (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) during IODP Expedition 399 (https://iodp3.org/expedition/399/). A total of 117 samples were selected to cover the full 1268 m depth of Hole U1601C as well as its lithological and textural variability. The data document the mineral major- and minor element composition as measured by EDS-SEM in thin section, or, in the case of samples with an MBIO suffix, polished billets.

Other constraints
The dataset has been formally approved by BGS for access by external clients under a BGS Digital Data Licence, issued via BGS's IPR Section. The dataset must not be provided to, or be accessible by, an external client until the IPR Section confirms that signed licence documentation is in place. Refer to the IPR Section (DigitalLE@bgs.ac.) if further advice is required.. Constraint applies until 2027-10-01

Other constraints
Either: (i) the dataset is made freely available, e.g. via the Internet, for a restricted category of use (e.g. educational use only); or (ii) the dataset has not been formally approved by BGS for access and use by external clients under licence, but its use may be permitted under alternative formal arrangements; or (iii) the dataset contains 3rd party data or information obtained by BGS under terms and conditions that must be consulted in order to determine the permitted usage of the dataset. Refer to the BGS staff member responsible for the creation of the dataset if further advice is required. He / she should be familiar with the composition of the dataset, particularly with regard to 3rd party IPR contained in it, and any resultant use restrictions. This staff member should revert to the IPR Section (ipr@bgs.ac.uk ) for advice, should the position not be clear.

Statement
Mineral major- and minor element concentrations were measured on polished and carbon coated thin sections or billets using a Zeiss Sigma HD field emission gun scanning electron microscope equipped with dual Oxford Instruments X-maxN 150 mm2 energy-dispersive silicon drift detectors at Cardiff University. Measurements were made using a 20 kV acceleration voltage, a beam current of 1.5 nA, and a dwell time of 10 s. A series of natural standards was used for calibration. Raw data were matrix- and background corrected using Oxford Instruments’ AZtec software. An in-house peridotite standard was used to check for reproducibility over the course of the data acquisition. Reproducibility varied with concentration, and was ±5% for elements occurring at concentrations of 1 wt% and ±0.5% for elements occurring at concentrations of 50 wt%.
