Phosphorus fractions and phosphate oxygen isotope measurements from three lake sediment cores, Rutland Water, UK (2024)

The data consist of a spreadsheet containing data for three lake sediment cores collected from Lagoon 3 at Rutland Water. The data were used to support the understanding of phosphate oxygen isotopes in lake sediments with focus on stability and application for assessing palaeo nutrient dynamics. Core 1 was used as a baseline core and analysed immediately after collection, and core 2 and 3 were treated with oxygen enriched water and incubated for 6 months under controlled conditions to then be analysed and track changes in phosphate oxygen isotope over time.

Statement
The data were collected following protocols to ensure the understanding of phosphorus loading and lake health by sequentially extracting four phosphorus pools. The protocol used for sequential phosphorus extraction is described in Adu-Gyamfi and Pfahler (2022) and the concentrations were measured using spectrophotometer (Perkin Elmer Lambda 35) Additionally, purification and precipitation of silver phosphate was done on phosphorus extracted using hydrochloric acid to understand the dynamics of phosphate within the collected lake sediments. The protocol used for purification and precipitations of silver phosphate is described in Abu-Gyamfi and Pfahler (2022), and the oxygen isotope in phosphate was analysed using an Elementar PYRO cube elemental analyser.
