Conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) data from Rothera Point, Antarctica, November 2023 to February 2024
This dataset comprises conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) casts which were deployed around Rothera Point, Adelaide Island on the West Antarctic Peninsula between November 2023 and February 2024. Data were captured as part of a biodiversity survey on an area to the north of Rothera Research station. Operations were conducted off small boats and casts sampled shallow waters between 10m and 60m in depth. Data comprises parameters such as pressure, salinity, density, turbidity and more in addition to conductivity, temperature and depth.
Data were collected by personnel at BAS, funded by the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Project (AIMP) Runway Project.

Methodology:
CTD profiles were measured with a Valeport SWiFT CTDplus, rated to 500 m, with an inbuilt optical sensor calibrated for turbidity measurements. Manufacturer-cited accuracy was ± 0.01 mS/cm for conductivity, +/- 0.01 degrees Celsius for temperature, and +/- 0.01 percent for pressure. Valeport Ocean software package was to manipulate, view and download the data from the CTD. Measurement were obtained every 0.1 m depth increment. The CTD was factory-calibrated in June 2023. The CTD operated in continuous mode and was deployed on the legs of the drop camera frame or by using a hand-spooled winch from a small boat at 20 sites around Rothera Point, with the objective of characterising water conditions across the survey area at three different time points during the 2023/24 austral summer. The available data are from the DOWN-casts only.
Data collection:
Instrumentation:
CTD + turbidity (Valeport SWiFT)
Data quality:
The CTD was calibrated by Valeport.
