An agate mill was used rather than a tungsten-carbide mill to minimise Nb and Ta contamination. Approximately 2g of each powdered sample were weighed into clean ceramic crucibles. The powders were ignited at 900oC for two hours to drive off any volatiles. Afterwards each vial was allowed to cool in a dessicator and re-weighed to obtain an accurate loss on lignition (LOI)
