Major and trace element whole rock analyses of igneous rock samples from the Virgin Islands
Major and trace element whole rock analyses of igneous rock samples from the Virgin Islands. Samples were collected from Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Norman Island, Beef Island and Peter Island. Major and trace element abundances were analysed using a JY Horiba Ultima 2 inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and a Thermo X7 series inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) at Chemostrat, North Wales using lithium tetraborate fusion.

- Statement
- Approximately 100 ml of the freshest part of the sample was then crushed and powdered using a clean jaw crusher and an agate ball mill. An agate mill was used rather than a tungsten-carbide mill to minimise Nb and Ta contamination. Approximately 2g of each powdered sample were weighed into clean ceramic crucibles. The powders were ignited at 900oC for two hours to drive off any volatiles. Afterwards each vial was allowed to cool in a dessicator and re-weighed to obtain an accurate loss on lignition (LOI)
