Ash transport by surface runoff using a laboratory flume–based experiment
[This nonGeographicDataset is embargoed until April 10, 2025]. This dataset describes measurements of transport of ash by surface runoff using a laboratory setup (flumes). In the experiment, three inflow rates (0.25, 1 and 2 L/min) were applied to two typical ash depths found after wildfires (1 and 3 cm). Variables measured include ash depth (cm), inflow rate (L/min), runoff rate (L/sec), ash transport rate (g/sec), ash concentration in the runoff (g/L). - Statement
- Six flumes were filled with ash (1 and 3 cm depth) and three inflow rates (L = 0.25 L/min, M = 1 L/min and H = 2 L/min) applied consecutively to each flume for 10 min in a different order to cover the six possible combinations (L-M-H, L-H-M, M-L-H, M-H-L, H-L-M, H-M-L). Six replicates per ash depth and inflow rate combination were conducted. Six runoff samples containing transported ash were taken at the flumes’ outlet at specific times (0, 1.5, 3, 6, 7.5 and 9). Samples were taken in plastic bottles for 15 seconds. Samples were weighed, dried (105 oC for 48 h) and weighed again to calculate runoff volume and ash weight. Inflow rate (L/min), runoff rate (L/sec), ash transport rate (g/sec), ash concentration (g/L) were calculated using the data obtained for the samples (volume, weight and time).
