Peat cores were extracted from 12 peatland sites from four regions of the Arctic: Svalbard, Norwegian and Finnish Lapland, Nunavut, Canada and Quebec, Canada Data originates from the analysis of Arctic peat cores for changes in rates of lateral expansion and vertical peat accumulation during recent centuries. Specifically, peat cores were analysed for moisture content (%), dry bulk density (g cm-3), C/N content (%), 210Pb activity levels (bq/kg), and 14C radiocarbon age (yr BP). In addition, one long core was taken from each site, except Kissuujaaluk Low and Angela’s Paradise. Each core was subsampled at 1 cm intervals and analysed for moisture content (%), dry bulk density (g cm-3), C/N content (%), 210Pb activity levels (bq/kg). Short-cores were radiocarbon dated at the base of the peat sequence, determined to be the deepest layer with a C content of ? 25 % and a dry bulk density ? 0.25 g cm-3. Long-cores were dated at the peat base and at regular intervals through the cores to develop a robust core chronology. Radiocarbon analysis was carried out at the Chrono14 centre, Queens University Belfast (n= 101), and University of Ottawa, Canada (n=37, Svalbard samples).
