BGS Geophysical maps

A collection of 1:250 000 scale geophysical maps in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, covering the United Kingdom and continental shelf areas between 1975 – 1990. Mapping is divided into squares which cover 1 degree by 1 degree of latitude / longitude. A geophysical map is a graphical representation of data collected through various geophysical methods to investigate the subsurface characteristics of the Earth. Geophysics is the study of the physical properties and processes of the Earth using measurements of physical quantities such as gravity, magnetic fields, seismic waves, electrical resistivity, and others. The collection includes aeromagnetic anomaly maps (1975 – 1990), Bouguer gravity anomaly maps (1975 – 1989) and a small number of free air anomaly maps (1981 – 1989). These maps are hard-copy paper records stored in the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) and are delivered as digital scans through the BGS website.

To encourage the use and re-use of these maps we have wherever possible made them available under the Open Government Licence, subject to the following acknowledgement accompanying the reproduced BGS materials: "Contains British Geological Survey materials © UKRI [year]". Some maps contain Ordnance Survey copyright. Maps produced by the Ordnance Survey are covered by Crown Copyright which is 50 years. For example, Crown Copyright on a map published in December 1972 would usually pass out of copyright in January 2023. Please check the OS Copyright Date on the individual map and if it is within copyright, please note the following terms and conditions: • You are granted a non-exclusive, royalty free revocable licence solely to view the licensed data for non-commercial purposes for the period during which the British Geological Survey makes it available; • You are not permitted to copy, sub-license, distribute, sell or otherwise make available the Licensed Data to third parties in any form; and • Third party rights to enforce the terms of this licence shall be reserved to Ordnance Survey. © Crown copyright and database rights [year] Ordnance Survey AC0000824781. Other constraints
Either: (i) the dataset is made freely available, e.g. via the Internet, for a restricted category of use (e.g. educational use only); or (ii) the dataset has not been formally approved by BGS for access and use by external clients under licence, but its use may be permitted under alternative formal arrangements; or (iii) the dataset contains 3rd party data or information obtained by BGS under terms and conditions that must be consulted in order to determine the permitted usage of the dataset. Refer to the BGS staff member responsible for the creation of the dataset if further advice is required. He / she should be familiar with the composition of the dataset, particularly with regard to 3rd party IPR contained in it, and any resultant use restrictions. This staff member should revert to the IPR Section (ipr@bgs.ac.uk ) for advice, should the position not be clear.

BGS Maps Portal ( HTTP )

The BGS maps portal provides access to over 45 000 high-resolution viewing images of almost all the small, medium and large scale maps produced by the BGS since mapping started in 1832 right up to the most recent maps released in 2020. It incorporates all the earlier maps and history pages that were previously made available through the BGS ‘Historical maps of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland’ web resource.

Statement
Maps created by the British Geological Survey between 1975 - 1990. The paper maps were scanned to TIF image format at 300 dpi as part a scanning project from c. 2000 to the present day. JPEG2000 and PDF copies were created from the master TIF scans.
